Installing 18″ Perfections Alaskan Yellow Cedar Roofing Shingles requires meticulous attention to detail to ensure a durable and aesthetically pleasing roof. Here are some essential installation tips:

1. Storage and Handling:

  • Proper Storage: Store shingles flat in a well-supported manner under dry cover. Ensure the storage area is well-ventilated and unheated. If storing on concrete, place a vapor barrier beneath the materials and elevate them to prevent moisture absorption.

2. Roof Deck Preparation:

  • Sheathing: Use solid sheathing materials like plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) to provide a stable base for shingle installation.
  • Underlayment: Apply a quality underlayment, such as Type 30 felt, over the sheathing to provide an additional layer of protection against moisture.

3. Ventilation:

  • Ensure Proper Ventilation: Adequate roof ventilation is crucial to prevent moisture buildup and extend the lifespan of the shingles. Ensure that the roof design allows for sufficient airflow beneath the shingles.

4. Fasteners:

  • Selection: Use corrosion-resistant nails, such as stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized nails, to prevent rust and staining.
  • Placement: Drive two nails per shingle, approximately 3/4 inch from each edge and 1 1/2 inches above the exposure line. For shingles wider than 10 inches, use two additional nails near the center, spaced about 1 inch apart.

5. Spacing and Alignment:

  • Keyway Spacing: Maintain a keyway space of 1/8 to 1/4 inch between each shingle to allow for expansion and contraction.
  • Side Lap: Ensure a side lap of at least 1 1/2 inches between joints in successive courses to enhance water shedding and prevent leaks.

6. Exposure:

  • Weather Exposure: For 18-inch shingles, a maximum exposure of 7 1/2 inches is recommended. This means each shingle course should cover 7 1/2 inches of the course below, leaving the remaining length exposed.

7. Installation Technique:

  • Starter Course: Begin with a double starter course at the base of the roof to provide a solid foundation and proper water shedding.
  • Nailing: Drive nails flush with the shingle surface without overdriving or underdriving, as improper nailing can compromise the integrity of the installation.

8. Valleys and Ridges:

  • Valley Flashing: Install metal flashing in valleys to direct water flow and prevent leaks.
  • Ridge Caps: Use appropriately sized ridge cap shingles to cover the ridge line, ensuring they overlap the top courses of shingles on both sides.

9. Maintenance:

  • Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the roof for signs of wear, damage, or moss growth. Address any issues promptly to maintain the integrity and appearance of the installation.
