Installing #2 16″ Five X Shingles – Red Label correctly is essential for achieving durability, weather resistance, and an attractive appearance. Follow these steps for proper installation:

1. Preparing for Installation

✅ Storage & Handling:

• Store shingles in a dry, well-ventilated area, off the ground, and covered to prevent moisture absorption.
• If possible, allow the shingles to acclimate to the local environment for a few days before installation.

✅ Roof Deck & Underlayment:

• Use solid sheathing (plywood or OSB) for a stable base.
• Apply a breathable underlayment, such as Type 30 felt paper, to protect against moisture and enhance longevity.
• For optimal performance, use cedar breather or furring strips to allow air circulation behind the shingles.

2. Fasteners & Nailing

✅ Choosing the Right Fasteners:

• Use stainless steel, hot-dipped galvanized, or aluminum nails to prevent rust and staining.
• Nails should be at least 1 ¼ inches long to ensure proper penetration into the sheathing.

✅ Nail Placement:

• Use two nails per shingle, placed ¾ inch from each edge and 1½ inches above the exposure line.
• For shingles wider than 10 inches, use two additional nails evenly spaced near the center.
• Avoid overdriving nails, as this can split the wood.

3. Shingle Spacing & Exposure

✅ Spacing Between Shingles:

• Leave a 1/8 to ¼ inch gap between each shingle to allow for natural expansion and contraction.

✅ Exposure Guidelines:

• For 16-inch Red Label shingles, the recommended maximum exposure is 5 inches to ensure proper water runoff.

✅ Side Lap:

• Stagger shingles so that the joints between shingles in one row are at least 1½ inches apart from the joints in the row below to prevent leaks.

4. Installation Techniques

• Install a double starter course at the roof’s edge for added protection.
• The bottom layer should overhang the eaves by at least 1 inch.

✅ Working Upward in Rows:

• Begin at the bottom of the roof or wall and work your way up, ensuring each row overlaps the previous one by the recommended exposure.
• Maintain a straight and even alignment for a uniform appearance.

• Use metal flashing in valleys to direct water flow and prevent leaks.

• Avoid direct contact between shingles and horizontal surfaces such as decks, chimneys, or concrete to prevent moisture buildup and premature decay.
